Built for people who find it hard to eat enough

Most food apps are made for eating less. Surplus is made for eating more, calmly, one meal at a time.

  • Not hungry in the morning?

That’s common, and mostly habit. Surplus helps you get a first meal in anyway, and starting small counts.

  • Full after half a plate?

Your stomach level shows when there should be room again, and a shake can still go down before a full meal can.

  • Forget to eat?

Give each meal a time, and Surplus nudges you when it’s due, with an easier option if a full meal is too much.

How Surplus helps

Plan

Plan the week. The shopping list writes itself.

Choose a recipe for each meal of the week, and Surplus adds up every ingredient into one list. Two recipes that both use chicken give you one line with the total.

Nudges

A nudge when it’s time to eat.

Give each meal a time on your day’s timetable, and Surplus reminds you when it’s due. Can’t face it yet? “Can’t eat right now” on your lock screen asks again 45 minutes later.

Logging

Log what you eat in a few taps.

Your regulars, your recipes, a food search or a barcode. About 10,500 everyday foods are built in and work offline, with your own country’s foods first.

The weight gain zone

See the zone you’re aiming for.

Your calories, protein, carbs and fat fill up as you go. A gold band on the calorie ring marks the weight gain zone: past the calories you need to stay the same weight, up to your target.

Your stomach level

Know when there’s room again.

Surplus estimates how full you’re likely to feel from what you’ve logged, and shows when you should have space for your next meal, so it comes when you can face it.

An estimate to help you time meals, not a measurement of your body.

Progress

Watch the weight go on.

Track your weight on a chart, add a progress photo to any weigh-in, and see your steps from Apple Health. If your weight stays flat for three weeks, your calorie target goes up by itself.

Questions

Who is Surplus for?

People who find it hard to eat enough to gain weight: if you fill up fast, aren’t hungry in the mornings, or forget to eat, Surplus is built around you. It’s for people aged 16 and over.

How is my calorie target set?

Surplus works out how many calories you use in a day from your weight, height, age, sex and activity, then adds a surplus for the pace you choose: slow, steady or quick.

How your calorie target is set

Does it work offline?

Yes. Everything you log is saved on your phone straight away, and about 10,500 everyday foods are built in. Searching the full food database and scanning a new barcode need a connection.

How does the free trial work?

You get every feature for 14 days. After that, a monthly or yearly subscription keeps it going, and you can cancel any time in your iPhone’s settings. Nothing you’ve logged is lost if you stop.
